Team from Avenues completes London to Brighton 100km challenge

Over the May bank holiday weekend a group of Avenues employees, some people we support, plus friends and family members attempted the London to Brighton 100km challenge. The aim was to raise money for our Active Communities Fund.

The fund provides financial support for people we are supporting in the community after years in hospital placements so they can set up home – often for the first time. There is no statutory support for this and in some cases people have lost contact with family and friends.

Many of our intrepid walkers finished the course within the allotted 24 hours, although not without some casualties. The team has raised upwards of a staggering £7000 so far.

We caught up with Stuart Girt, Business Systems Project Manager, to see hear about the highs and lows:​​

'Well we finally did it, walking 100km in under 24 hours from London, Richmond Park to Brighton Race Course. I understand now why they call it an 'ultra-challenge' and it was tough going, we had a few casualties along the way with blisters, aches and sprains, but everyone showed grit and determination and did what they could – everyone should be very proud of themselves.

Luckily the weather held out and we had glorious sunshine for most of the challenge. It was great walking through the busy streets of London and then into the quietness of the countryside. Great moments along the way included a couple of groups of children who had set up a stall with water and banoffee pie, which was a welcome surprise.

Walking overnight was an experience, I think most of us 'sleep walked' at some point, but it was great seeing the sun come up over the hills.

The finishing line was at Brighton Race Course, we were certainly not walking at the speed of a Grand National racehorse, more like a tortoise at that point, but we made it helped by the motivation of raising money for Avenues’ Active Communities Fund.'

I was wearing a Fitbit watch and it recorded the following:​

  • 143,451 steps taken
  • 12,000 calories burned
  • I walked up the equivalent of 433 flights of stairs
  • I walked for 22 hours
