Thomas Road holds Macmillan Coffee morning with Great British Bake Off finalist

After fundraising by completing the ‘Bridge the Gap’ walk in Cambridge, Laura*, one of the people we support at Thomas Road, decided she wanted to hold a Macmillan coffee morning.

Avenues supports three people at Thomas Road, a residential service near Cambridge.

Laura wanted to invite the women she volunteers with at the local Women’s Institute over to the house for coffee, and since she had enjoyed fundraising before, her support worker suggested a Macmillan coffee morning. Laura visited the website, with her support worker, to find out more and was really keen on the idea, so ordered the pack to hold her own coffee morning to raise money for Macmillan nurses.

After this, Laura was supported to put up posters in the local village and invite neighbours, family and friends. One of the support workers mentioned that Ian Cummings, a finalist on the Great British Bake Off 2015 lived in the village, and invited him along.

In late September, Laura held her coffee morning at Thomas Road. She decorated the garden in the style of a vintage tea party and put on a best cake competition and ‘guess the number of spots on the cake’, to raise some more money. In combination with the £2 everyone paid to attend the morning, Laura made £135 to donate to Macmillan.

Family, friends, neighbours, the women from the Women’s Institute and other residents at Thomas Road all came along and had a lovely morning eating cake and chatting. Ian Cummings, Great British Bake Off finalist, also attended the morning and judged the cakes for the competition and awarded a bottle of wine and chocolates to the winner.

Rachel Ranner, Assistant Service Manager at Thomas Road said ‘It was a great morning, everyone we support really enjoyed it. Laura had done a lot to plan the day and was in her element socialising with everyone and making sure they were entering the competitions. It was great to see the WI ladies there as Laura is a valued member, and it meant a lot to her that they attended. Everyone enjoyed it so much, we’ll be having an annual coffee morning from now on!’
