CQC praises staff for consistently outstanding work

The outstanding supported living services provided by Avenues have once again led the Care Quality Commission (CQC) to award us its top rating.

The South East team, which works across Kent, Surrey, Sussex and Essex, was the first Supported Living social care provider in the country to be awarded Outstanding status in all five quality criteria following its inspection by the CQC in 2015.

And when inspectors returned this year, they again found the services to be of the highest level, marking them as Outstanding across the criteria – safe, caring, effective, responsive and well led.

The inspectors heard of families’ high regard for the support teams, which specialise in working with people who have learning disability and behaviour that challenges.

The inspectors spoke to a number of different families who told them …

“Staff go the extra mile to ensure our son is safe".

"The people who work with him care about him. They make improvements to his life"

"They are almost unrecognisable in their independence since being supported by Avenues"

"The standard of care is very close to home, that's the best compliment I can pay them"

The inspection found that this effective support was based in the support given to staff by management, which encouraged them be reflective in their practice and strive to improve.

Regional Director Dan Gower-Smith, who is the services’ registered manager, said the findings provided important external recognition for staff. He explained: “Supporting people to develop throughout their lives, and balancing the need for safety while taking risks that lead to greater independence, is highly-skilled and demanding work.

“But at the same time it’s all ‘business as usual’ for our employees, which means they can be the last to recognise the positive impact of what they do.

“They should all take huge pride in the rating from the CQC – it’s hard earned and well deserved.”

Deborah Ivanova, Deputy Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care, said;

“Avenues South East Services is clearly a service that has placed providing consistent, high quality person-centred support that enables people live independently at the very heart of its operations.

“To receive consecutive overall Outstanding ratings is a commendable achievement and the staff and management at the service should be very proud of this and the consistent high-quality, compassionate and person-centred support they are providing”
